Between 1912 and 1956, this was the site of the London Hydro Shop, the first of its kind in Ontario. This shop promoted the household use of electricity through innovative marketing and sales techniques for domestic appliances. Sir Adam Beck used the motto "Dona naturae pro populo sunt" (The gifts of nature are for the public). Then in 1928, the City Hall was also built on this site. The exterior design carries the lines already established by the P.U.C. building, originally a three storey structure. The P.U.C. building was increased to four stories. The junction between the two buildings was merged by a massive front entrance way with oversized windows that extended through the second and third levels. The City Hall remained on Dundas Street at this address until it moved on September 22, 1971.
